Pregnancy Diet: 5 Food To Eat When You Are Pregnant

A healthy diet should be maintained during pregnancy. It is the time when the body needs additional nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. A healthy diet is very important for a baby’s growth and complete development. It is basically a main source of nourishment. So the diet of a pregnant lady must include calcium, folic acid, iron, and protein. A poor diet can cause gestational diabetes and birth complications.

1. Dairy products

To meet the needs of the growing fetus you need to consume extra protein and calcium. At least 1000mg of calcium is required in pregnancy. Dairy food is the main source of calcium, protein, and vitamin D. Calcium is important for the building of strong teeth, bones, muscle, and nerve function. Dairy products include milk, cheese, yogurt, cream soups, puddings, etc. Yogurt is the most beneficial dairy product in pregnancy. Probiotics also help pregnant ladies by reducing the risk of complications.

2. Fruits and Vegetables

A pregnant lady should eat fruits and vegetables. It contains many nutrients like vitamin C and folic food. a pregnant lady should have at least 70 mg vitamin C daily. Fruits and vegetables containing vitamin c are oranges, grapes, honeydew, broccoli, tomatoes, and Brussel sprouts. Folic acid helps to prevent neural tube defects. 0.4 mg folic acid is required per day as per recommendation. A good source of folic acid include leafy vegetables and legumes.

3. Bread and grains

These food are important and the main sources of energy. They also provide carbohydrates, fiber, iron and vitamin B. a pregnant lady should consume 6-11 oz of bread or grains daily according to their weight and need.

4. Protein

Pregnant women should include protein such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, tofu, cheese, milk, nuts, and seeds, etc in their diet. A developing child needs protein in the second and third trimesters. A pregnant lady should consume 3 servings of protein daily.

5. Water

It is very important for a pregnant lady to stay hydrated during pregnancy. It has a lot of benefits for both mother and child. It helps in relieving from constipation, reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. It also builds new cells, delivers nutrients and flush toxins. So a pregnant lady should drink 2 liters water per day.
