Food To Avoid During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the most important period. So it is very important to take care of a woman’s diet. Here are a few items that a woman should avoid for a healthy life a child and minimize problems during pregnancy.

1. Alcohol

According to research having alcohol during pregnancy can transfer to baby through the umbilical cord and cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders include physical problems, learning problems and behavioral difficulties in the child. So it is highly recommended to avoid alcohol during pregnancy.

2. Fish with a high level of mercury

According to the research seafood such as swordfish, shark, king mackerel, marlin, tilefish, and orange roughy contain high levels of methyl mercury in it which is a toxic chemical. Methyl mercury can cause harmful effects on the unborn baby’s brain, kidneys, and nervous system. So a pregnant lady should avoid fish with a high level of mercury.

3. Raw Meat

A pregnant lady should avoid raw and undercooked meats, raw fish, raw and undercooked shellfish to prevent toxoplasmosis. A toxoplasma is an infection that can be pass by a mother to her baby. It causes problems like blindness and mental disability in a child later in life.

4. Raw eggs

Food items including raw eggs are cake icings, homemade ice cream, salad dressings, homemade mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce, poached eggs, etc. Raw eggs contain salmonella which causes fever, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea to mother. In some cases, the infection can cause cramps in the uterus which can lead to premature birth or stillbirth.

5. Caffeine

Caffeine is found in tea, coffee, soft drinks, and cocoa. pregnant women are advised to limit caffeine intake to 200 mg per day. High-level consumption of caffeine can restrict fetal growth and can cause low birth weight. Low birth weight can increase the risk of infant death and chronic diseases in adulthood.
